After showing several warning signs, Piton de la Fournaise has erupted as from May 17, 2015 for the second time this year. Gas and lava projections reach up to 30-50 m (up to 100-160 ft) high. The lava flows occurs in an uninhabited area. The eruption ended on May 30.

Piton de la Fournaise (2 632 m) is located in the southeast of Reunion Island (Indian Ocean). It is a volcano that has effusive eruptions (as opposed to volcanoes with explosive eruptions). It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world by its eruption frequency and its average volume of lava, which are comparable to those of Mount Etna in Italy. The previous eruption dates back to February 4, 2015.

The volcano is one of the major tourist attractions of the island.  In the absence of eruption, the 8 km (5.0 mi) wide caldera, known as Enclos Fouqué, is open to visitors. During the eruptions, lava flows can often be watched remotely. Sometimes the lava flows reached the ocean.
