September 2016: Italy - Temporary closure of the airport of Rome Ciampino.

Since the runways are to be renovated, the Ciampino airport of Rome will be closed from 14 to 29 October 2016. The airport is served by low-cost airlines Ryanair and Wizz Air. During the closure, their flights will be diverted to the terminal 2 of Rome Fiumicino airport. Rome Ciampino airport is located southeast of the city of Rome and Fiumicino to the west.

August 24, 2016: Myanmar and Italy - Earthquakes.

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in the central region of Myanmar. It was felt up to Bangladesh. It killed at least 4 and damaged about 200 ancient pagodas mainly in Bagan region. Bagan is a famous archeological site that is home to more than 2,000 pagodas, temples and other buildings built between the 10th and 14th centuries. On the same day, an earthquake killed about 250 in the region of Umbria in Italy.

July 3, 2016: Italy - Restoration of the Colosseum.

The restoration of the facade and the arches of the Colosseum in Rome has been completed. The interior of the Colosseum only remains to be renovated. With 6.5 million visitors per year, the Colosseum is the most visited tourist attraction of Italy.

December 25, 2015: Italy - Restored villas at Pompeii.

On the archaeological site of Pompeii, six villas that have been restored are re-opened to the public. The current restoration of the site started in 2013 after years of neglect and goes on with the international assistance. Pompeii is the second most visited tourist site in Italy after the Colosseum in Rome.

December 3, 2015: Italy- Spectacular eruption of Etna. 

In Sicily, Mount Etna experienced its largest eruption of the last 20 years. The eruption started on December 3, 2015 and ended three days later. Mount Etna (3,330 m / 10,920 ft) is the highest volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world.

May 1, 2015: Italy - Opening of the Universal Exhibition in Milan.

The 2015 Universal Exposition in Milan opened on May 1, 2015. It will last 6 months. Its motto is "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life". The site is located 25 minutes by metro from the Duomo station. It is expected to welcome some 20 million visitors. The Linate, Malpensa and Orio al Serio airports are all the same distance from the Exposition Site, and offer shuttle bus services into downtown Milan.
