August 24, 2016: Myanmar and Italy - Earthquakes.

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in the central region of Myanmar. It was felt up to Bangladesh. It killed at least 4 and damaged about 200 ancient pagodas mainly in Bagan region. Bagan is a famous archeological site that is home to more than 2,000 pagodas, temples and other buildings built between the 10th and 14th centuries. On the same day, an earthquake killed about 250 in the region of Umbria in Italy.

October 2015: Myanmar
 - Change in local currency (kyat).

In order to limit the use of the U.S. dollar in Myanmar, the Central Bank of Myanmar has revoked the foreign exchange license that was granted to a wide range of businesses (hotels, restaurants, shops, and others). Foreign visitors must therefore buy kyats upon arrival at the airport or at the domestic banks and pay their local expenses in kyat.

The authorities of the country want to prevent the local people from using the U.S. dollar for domestic payments, as it widely happens in Cambodia. The kyat foreign exchange rates dropped sharply this year.

Early August 2015: Myanmar - deadly monsoon.

Several Asian countries, including Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Viet Nam, are facing extreme monsoon rains which have caused the death of hundreds of people in the aftermath of cyclone Komen. In Myanmar, a United Nations agency speaks of a major natural disaster. Chin and Rakhine states in the western side of the country as well as Sagaing and Magway regions are the worst-hit areas. A flood alert was issued in the Irrawaddy Delta which was already terribly ravaged by cyclone Nargis in 2008.
