Laos enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons – the rainy season from the beginning of May to the end of September and the dry season from October through to April. The yearly average temperature is about 28°C/82°F, with a maximum of 38°C/100°F in April and May. In Vientiane, the low temperature of about 19°C/66°F occurs in January. In mountainous areas, however, temperatures can drop to 14-15°C/the high 50s°F during the winter months, and at night drop to freezing or a bit lower. The average precipitation is highest in southern Laos, where the Annamite Mountains receive over 3,000 mm (10 feet) annually. In Vientiane rainfall is 1,500-2,000 mm (five to almost seven feet) annually, and in the northern provinces only 1,000-1,500 mm (three to five feet) annually. Laos travel guide homepage
