Halong Bay Cruises  Most visitors plan this as an overnight or two-night excursion from Hanoi. It’s an easy day trip to go out, around the bay, and back, but it’s far more pleasant to spend a night (or two) in a local guesthouse.   The typical trip is a morning departure from your hotel in Hanoi, a three- to four-hour bus ride to the bay, and then a cruise across the bay to Cat Ba Island, which has a number of mid-range hotels. Your trip will probably include all meals.    The outbound trip usually includes a stop at one or more craft shops. There is a great handicraft shop on the outbound trip to Halong Bay. The products are made by disabled people, are of excellent quality, and reasonably priced. Most tour buses stop there, and it’s one of the few such stops I found worthwhile. The embroidery is fabulous, and you are helping some of the most downtrodden people in the country get and keep gainful employment.     The first or second day of your trip includes a cruise around the bay, with several stops to see floating villages and karst caves    If your plan is to spend some quiet time, use a travel agency for transportation, then book your own hotel and leave the tour group until it’s time to return to Hanoi.    You can also go by train to the harbor area and hire a boat or take the ferry or hydrofoil to Cat Ba Island.     You find hereunder links to travel operators specialized in Halong Bay cruises.
