Language
A few elderly Cambodians still speak French, and English is spoken by people in the tourist industry and some well educated Cambodians.
For the most part, however, the language is Khmer, and the alphabet relates back to ancient Sanskrit. While there are common words with many other languages in the region, there are not enough similarities so that people from one country can understand those from another.
Like most of its neighbors, Cambodia is a multi-ethnic society, and this has been the source of many of its woes. The dominant ethnic group is, of course, the Khmer. The total population is about 13 million, and fewer than 400,000 of those are non-Khmer.
Since the departure of the ruling Vietnamese in 1989, Cambodia has not been a good place for the remaining ethnic Vietnamese.
