The Gambia is a densely-populated country that stretches along the Gambia River in West Africa. Excepted for a small coast on the Atlantic Ocean, the country is an enclave of Senegal. Its capital, Banjul, is located at the river mouth. Banjul was an important trading post during the colonial period and is now the economic and administrative centre of the country.

With the splendid beaches which are located south of Banjul, probably the most beautiful ones in Africa, tourism is a major industry of the Gambia.

With the Kiang West National Park, the Abuko Nature Reserve, and some other protected areas, the Gambia is also a favourite destination in Africa as for bird and wildlife watching.

Furthermore, the Gambia is famous for its rich past since the river was the first trade route into the interior of Africa. The Gambia has two sites which have been listed by Unesco as World Heritage, including James Island, and many historical monuments as well as the Gambia National Museum in Banjul.
