Macau Events & Festivals Macau’s varied cultural history has given it a full schedule of events and festivals throughout the year and, although a visit during these times is likely to be busier, the rewards often outweigh the costs. Macau’s Christian history means that Christmas and Easter are celebrated with more gusto here than on the mainland. Other events and festivals of note include: New Year’s Eve (December 31st) – Marked by impressive fireworks over Nam Van Lake and big crowds in the illuminated Largo do Senado. Procession of the Lord of Steps (Lent, February/March) – A huge procession of clergy in full regalia carries the statue of Christ on the cross in a circuit from St. Augustine’s Church. Arts Festival (March/April) – Various acts from hip-hop to Cantonese opera are staged nightly for nearly a month in the atmospheric Largo do Senado. There are also plays staged in theaters around the peninsula and painting exhibits at the Cultural Center. Tam Kung’s Birthday (May) – This Taoist deity is particularly important to fishermen and is celebrated by temple processions and performances of Chinese opera, particularly in Coloane village. Procession of Our Lady of Fatima (May 13th) – Catholic girls clad in white carry the statue of Our Lady from St. Dominic’s church to the chapel on top of Penha hill, accompanied by chanting clergy. Macau Open (May) – One of the more dramatic courses on the Asian Golf Tour. Dragon Boat Races (May) – Nam Van Lake is a great place to enjoy these traditional longboat races with teams strongly but calmly paddling to the steady beat of a drum. International Fireworks Contest (September/October) – This incredible display sees international contestants trying to outshine each other. Macau Grand Prix (November) – The climax of the Formula 3 calendar. Macau travel guide homepage
