Macau’s currency, the pataca, usually written as MOP$, is worth fractionally less than the Hong Kong dollar, which is also accepted in Macau. The rate at the time of writing was eight pataca to the US dollar.

By the decision of the Government, the Pataca is linked to the Hong Kong dollar (HK$) which is accepted as currency in Macau. The exchange rate is MOP$103.20 = HK$100.00. There is an acceptable variation up to 10%

Banks: Banks are generally open from 9 am-5 pm Mondays to Fridays, and 9 am-noon on Saturdays. They can be found throughout the peninsula, especially on Avenida Infante Domingo Henrique. Most have ATMs that accept international cards.

Exchange Offices: On Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, they stay open until 9 or 10 pm, but they can be fussy about which bills they accept. If you’re really stuck, some of the casinos such as the Lisboa have around-the-clock facilities
