Visas Citizens of most Western countries do not need a visa for short visits to Hong Kong as long as employment isn’t sought. Many nationalities, including Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders and most Europeans, can stay for up to three months with no visa, while Brits are allowed up to six months. You have to fill in an embarkation card on carbon paper of which one copy is kept by immigration officials while the other is tucked back into your passport – try to hold onto it to avoid having to fill out another one on your departure. You can get your visa from the Consulate Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 7F, Lower Block, China Resources Building, 26 Harbour Road, Wanchai, Mon-Fri 9 am -noon & 2-5 pm). However, it’s often cheaper and easier to use the visa services offered by most hotels and travel agencies. China Travel Service (CTS) at 27-33 Nathan Road is conveniently located, and there are also specialized agents such as Japan Travel Agency at 509-513, 5F, East Ocean Center, 98 Granville Road in Tsimashatsui. They can arrange a visa in a day if necessary, more usually two. Costs for a standard entry visa through agents range from HK$200 (three-month single entry) to HK$650 (one year multi-entry), depending on your nationality, how quickly you want the visa processed, its duration and the number of entries. You can also get visas at the airport if you don’t want to come in to the city. Which ever way you apply, you’ll need a passport photo and your passport.
