How to go to Madagascar

By air

Usually, travellers go to Madagascar by air since the opportunities to go there by sea are extremely limited, excepted for cruises.

In Europe, there are direct flights from Paris with Air Madagascar, Air France and Corsair and a few one’s from Milan. The journey from Paris lasts approximately 11 hours.

In Asia, flights depart mainly from Bangkok with Air Madagascar or Thai Airways. Some flights stop over at Singapore or Hong Kong. From July 2009, Air Madagascar will serve Guanghzou (China) via Bangkok

There is a regular service with South Africa. Air Madagascar, South African Airways and Airlink fly from Johannesburg, 6 days a week.

With Kenya (Nairobi), the connections are carried out by Kenya Airways or Air Madagascar.

Moreover, Madagascar is well connected to the other islands of the Indian Ocean, more precisely Mauritius, Reunion, Mayotte and the Comoros, by Air Madagascar, Air Mauritius, and Air Austral.

Travellers from other countries, including North America, the United Kingdom, Germany, India, and Australia, usually stop over at Paris, Johannesburg or possibly in Mauritius, depending on the country they come from.

Intercontinental flights arrive at the airport of Antananarivo which is located at Ivato, 20 km (12 miles) away from the capital. It takes approximately 45 minutes to go there from downtown. Taxis are available at the airport. Air Madagascar provides a regular bus service to Antananarivo.

Flights, mainly from the other islands of the Indian Ocean, serve also other airports of Madagascar, including those of Nosy Be, Antsiranana, Mahajanga, Toamasina and Sainte-Marie. Airlink also provides a weekly flight from Johannesburg to Tolagnaro (Fort Dauphin).
