Where to Eat in Guilin Southerners have long been renowned for their love of all culinary things weird, wonderful and sometimes grotesque. Guilin is no exception to this southern eating style, and is influenced by Cantonese cuisine. The variety of foods that are consumed here and the freshness of the produce is astounding and sometimes alarming! If you’re into food exploration, there’s plenty to keep you busy along Nanhuan Lu where you’ll find restaurants with caged animals outside. If that’s not your cup of tea there are also plenty of restaurants serving simpler dishes, as well as a handful of Western cafés and the ubiquitous fast food chains, including a McDonald’s on Central Square and a KFC in the Niko-Niko Do Plaza. Guilin Ren, 128 Zhongshan Zhong Lu (daily 11 am-10 pm). This enormous buffet-style eating emporium has a fantastic array of foods from the region and indeed the world. You can watch the preparation and cooking process. The stretched noodles are excellent. Good Aunt, Bagui Dasha, opposite Center Square, Sanduo Lu. Similar to Guilin Ren. Good Aunt is a popular buffet-style eatery that serves tasty dishes from around the country. Yiyuan Fandian, 106 Nanhuan Lu (daily 9 am-2 pm & 4:30-9 pm). This is a great place to sample delicious fiery Szechuan gongbao jiding, fish flavored pork and a host of vegetable dishes. They even use genuine Szechuan flower peppers, which create a fragrant tingling sensation in your mouth. Of course, if you don’t like it hot, they can tone it down, and the helpful staff in this popular restaurant can speak some English. Booking ahead is advised in the evenings.
