Ölüdeniz is a beach resort situated about 12 km from the city of Fethiye in the southwest of Turkey. Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Marmaris and Bodrum are the main holiday resorts of the Turkish province of Mugla.

Fethiye, known as Telmessos in the antique period, was an important city of Lycia.

Lycia is the ancient name of a region (currently the provinces of Mugla and Antalya) that consisted of a federation of 23 ancient cities
on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The federation was based on democratic principles. Lycia became later a province of the Roman Empire.
