It has a capacity for 40,960 worshippers (7126 worshippers in the main prayer hall and 22,729 worshippers in the courtyard). It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the eighth largest mosque in the world. It features 80 domes, over 1,000 columns, 24 carat gold-plated chandeliers and the world’s largest hand-woven carpet (5,627 m2 or 60,570 sq ft). 28 different types of marble are used throughout and include: Sivec from Greece / Macedonia, used on the external cladding (there is 115,119 square metres of cladding including the minarets); Lasa from Italy used in the internal elevations; Makrana from India used in the annexes and offices. Aquabiana and Biano from Italy East White and Ming green from China. The Mosque is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and the first President of the United Arab Emirates, who is also buried there. The mosque was officially opened in 2007. Unlike other mosques in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open for non-Muslims to tour. Complimentary one hour guided tours, run by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, start at 09:45 Sundays to Thursdays. Three other particularly attractive mosques can be found in Abu Dhabi city centre: one is on the edge of the car park between Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre and Sheikh Zayed 1st Street; the second across Khalid Bin Waleed St from the British Embassy; and the third on the corner of Al Nasr St and King Khalid Bin Abdel Aziz Saeed St near the Corniche. There are roughly 150 mosques in Abu Dhabi city and more than 2,500 in the emirate as a whole. The largest chandelier – which is the biggest in the world – is under the main dome. It is 10 metres (33 ft) in diameter and 15 metres in height and weighs over nine tonnes
