The Atacama Desert is located in northern Chile. It is believed to be the driest desert in the world. It is composed mostly of salt basins, sand, felsic lava, and important copper mines. It is also one of the best places in the world to conduct astronomical observations.

The Salar de Atacama is a giant salt area situated in the Atacama Desert (northern Chile). It is the largest salt flat in Chile: it is is about 100 km long and 80 km wide. Some areas of the Salar de Atacama, including those inhabited by pink flamingos, form part of Los Flamencos National Reserve.
