(Tiahuanaco in Spanish) is an important Pre-Columbian archaeological site in western Bolivia. It is one of the most important precursors to the Inca Empire. It is the capital of a powerful empire that dominated a large area of the southern Andes and beyond and reached its apogee between 500 and 900 AD.


The ruins ofTiwanaku are a world heritage site (UNESCO). They are located in the area of Lake Titicaca. Kalasasaya is a terreplein temple, which is believed to have been dedicated to the Sun and it had an astronomic function. The Ponce Monolith has been placed at the center of the patio. Other attractions of the site include the Pumapunku Pyramid, the   Akapana Pyramid, the Gateway of the Sun, the Bennett Monolith, Sukakollos (cultivation platforms), and more.

The Aymara are a native ethnic group in the Andes (Bolivia, Peru and Chile). They lived in the region for many centuries before becoming a subject people of the Inca and later of the Spanish in the 16th century. They currently form the largest indigenous group in the Bolivian Altiplano. The Quechua are the main ethnic group in Bolivia.

he Quechua, have chewed coca plants for centuries and used its leaves in traditional medicine as well as in religious rituals. President Evo Morales is an Aymara coca-grower.

The Aymara people celebrate their New Year on the southern hemisphere's winter solstice, which marks the start of the new agricultural cycle.
