The Bay of Kotor is a beautiful bay located on the Adriatic Sea in Montenegro. It is composed of several smaller broad bays, united by narrower channels. With its privileged natural location, the Bay of Kotor has been settled for millennia.

In the Middle Ages, this natural harbour was an important artistic and commercial centre with its own schools of masonry and iconography. Several monuments were seriously damaged by an earthquake in 1979 but restoration has been achieved with UNESCO’s help.

With several resorts including Kotor, Budva, Tivat, Perast, and Herceg Novi, the Bay of Kotor is now a popular tourist destination.

The whole region is a natural and cultural site which has been inscribed on the list of world heritage by UNESCO.

The city of Kotor has been known under many names throughout history. It was first mentioned in 168 BC as Ascrivium when it was part of the Roman province of Dalmatia.
