The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located northwest of Kegalle, halfway between Colombo and Kandy. It was established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservaion of Sri lanka in order to look after the orphaned elephants. It has now the largest herd of captive elephants in the world (about 80 elephants).

The Elephant Orphanage is a popular tourist attraction in Sri Lanka with many foreign and national visitors every day.
