A complex of 5 caves in the rock of Dambulla hosts the historic Rock Temple (officially known as the Rangiri Dambulla Rajamaha Viharaya). It is one of the oldest Buddhist shrines in Sri Lanka and a world heritage site (Unesco). The Rock Temple dates back to the first century BC.
