Alahana Parivena is a vast complex erected by King Parakramabahu in the Northern part of Polonnaruwa. It was a monastic university extending over an area of more than eighty hectares and consisted of several separate units.

The Lankatilaka is an imposing brick-built sanctuary situated at the heart of the site. It contains a colossal standing Buddha statue.

Buddha in Gal Vihara in Polonnaruwa, in Sri Lanka

Gal Vihara is aock temple founded by King Pakramabahu in Polonnaruwa to the north of Alahana Parivena. Gal Vihara is famous for its four large rock-cut Buddha statues: two seated figures, a 7m. high standing figure and a 14m. long reclining Buddha that have been carved on a sngle granite rock face. All of them are well-preserved and considered as one of the masterpiecs of Sri Lankan Buddhist sculpture.

This reclining Buddha statue is one of the largest sculptures in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.
