Nuwara Eliya is a popular tourist destination in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It is a base to visit the hill country, its picturesque landscapes, and Horton Plains national park. It is also a place for shopping.

Nuwara Eliya, also called the City of Lights or Little England, is located at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) and therefore has a cooler climate than the lowlands of Sri Lanka. The town was developed by the British as a hill retreat during the colonial era. With its English country style houses and gardens, Nuwara Eliya still keeps a British atmosphere.

The summer resort is also the heart of the tea production country in Sri Lanka.
