The Atacama desert is an arid high plateau in northern Chile. San Pedro de Atacama is located at an altitude of 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level. Tours can take you to altitudes of 4,500 meters (14,763 feet) and more (a period of acclimatization is required), with some volcanos and peaks at more than 5,000 m above mean sea level.
