The Rotorua region is famous for the Maori culture, the geothermal earth forces, diverse landscape (including many lakes), and outdoor activities. Rotorua is a 2.5 hour drive to Tongariro National Park which is a cultural and natural world heritage site (UNESCO).

Wai-O-Tapu in the North Island of New Zealand
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland near Rotorua in the North Island of New Zealand - hot springs.

Waiotapu is an active geothermal area located about 30 km south of Rotorua in the Taupo Volcanic Zone in the North Island of New Zealand. Waiotapu is an 18 km² large reserve. A part of this reserve, called "Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland", is open to visitors.
