The Olympic Stadium hosts the Athletics and Paralympic Athletics events (more than 200 events) at the London 2012 Games, as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. It is located at Marshgate Lane in Stratford in the South of the Olympic Park. The Stadium is surrounded by waterways on three sides. Spectators reach the venue via five bridges that link the site to the surrounding area.

The Olympic Stadium of London has capacity for the games of approximately 80,000, a bit less than Wembley Stadium (90,000) and Twickenham Stadium (82,000). It will be converted down to a 60,000 seat permanent stadium after the Games. It will host the 2017 World Championships in Athletics.

The architect of the Olympic Stadium of London is Populous Cy, an international firm specializing in the design of sports facilities and convention centres.

The London 2012 football competition is spread across six other major grounds around the UK: City of Coventry Stadium, Hampden Park (Glasgow), Millennium Stadium (Cardiff), Old Trafford (Manchester), St James' Park (Newcastle), and Wembley Stadium.

The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a 115 metres (377 ft) high observation tower in the Olympic Park in Stratford, London, a visitor attraction during London 2012 and a lasting legacy of this major sporting event. It sits between the Olympic Stadium and Aquatics Centre. It has two indoor 300m² platforms offering dramatic views of London’s skyline.

The ArcelorMittal Orbit  has been designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. It is the tallest sculpture in the United Kingdom. It is 22 metres taller than the Statue of Liberty (USA) and much lower than the 320 metres (1,050 ft) tall Eiffel Tower in Paris (France).

A total of 2,000 tonnes of steel has been used to build the ArcelorMittal Orbit. Some 19,000 litres of red coulour paint have been used to paint the ArcelorMittal Orbit.

The spiral staircase is 350 metres in length and has 455 steps. Orbit has 2 passenger lifts of 21 person capacity each which are able to accommodate for 500 - 700 people per hour. Orbit is fully accessible by wheelchair. When you get to the top, there's not just a huge vista all around, but a big hole in the centre of the viewing platform so you can look back down on the steelwork.

The structure has been both praised and criticised ("a giant Mr. Messy", "the Eiffel Tower after a nuclear attack.", ...).
