The islands of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre form the island of Guadeloupe. Both islands are separated only by the Rivière Salée (Salt River).

Grande-terre is home to several tourist resorts such as Saint-François, Sainte-Anne, Le Moule and Le Gosier while the large urban area of Pointe-à-Pitre, which is located in a central position in the archipelago, is the economic centre of the island.

Grande-Terre is smaller than Basse-Terre Island. But, it is larger than the two uninhabited islands of Petite Terre which are situated about 10 km off the coast of Grande-Terre.
