Tashilumpo monastery in Shigatse, Tibet.

Shigatse is the second largest city in Tibet Autonomous Region. The Tashilhunpo Monastery which is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, the highest ranking Lama after the Dalai Lama, is located in Shigatse. It is the main monastery outside Lhasa in Tibet. Since he was 6 years old, the current Panchen Lama (Gedhun Choekyi Nyima) has been detained in Beijing by authorities of the People's Republic of China. Instead of him, Gyaincain Norbu was enthroned by the Chinese.

The Tashilhunpo Monastery and its rich heritage was destroyed at the instigation of the Chinese in the 1960's and rebuilt later thanks to foreign donations. It is open to visitors. The Tibetan diaspora opened a Tashilumpo monastery in India.
