It is located in a lava field in Grindavík in southwestern Iceland, only 13 km (8 miles) away from the Keflavík International Airport. Bathing in the Blue Lagoon is reputed to help some people suffering from skin diseases. The bathing lagoon is 5000 m² wide. It holds six million liters of geothermal seawater all of which is renewed every 40 hours.Hvitserkur sea stack* in Iceland.Hvítserkur is a 15 m (50 feet) high piece of former volcano that protrudes out of the sea just off shore on the eastern side of Vatnsnes (Northern Iceland). The sea erosion has carved three holes through its foundations and sculptures it in the shape of a lonely petrified monster in the sea. The base of Hvitserkur sea stack has been reinforced with concrete. Hvítserkur was commemorated on an Icelandic stamp in 1990. Icelandic legend says it was once a nocturnal troll who got turned to stone by the rising sun. A large number of seabirds can be seen on the rock. Hvitserkur means "white shirt": it is indeed covered with guano and droppings. * A stack is a geological landform consisting of a steep vertical column of rock in the sea near a coast, isolated by erosion.
