Vøringfossen waterfall in Norway
Vøringfossen waterfall in Norway.

Vøringfossen is made of multiple waterfalls all converging at the top of Måbødalen. It has a total height of 182 meters. You can view the falls from upper and lower lookouts.

The waterfall is located in the municipality of Eidfjord (Hordaland), not far from Highway 7 between Oslo and Bergen and about 300 km away from Oslo. A 30 min walk from the main road takes you to the bottom of the valley. Wear good shoes.

The old road, constructed between 1887 and 1924, winds up the mountain side in 125 hairpin bends.

Vøringfossen is not by far the highest waterfall in the country, but it is probably the most famous one. It would be the third most visited tourist attraction in Norway. The Hardangervidda Nature Centre is situated at the foot of Vøringsfossen waterfall in Eidfjord. It has three floors of exhibitions, educational videos and illustrative texts of the natural environment of the mountain plateau, from the past to the present. Here, you can also see Ivo Caprino’s fantastic panoramic film, “Fjord, mountain and waterfall”. Kjeåsen farm, also in Eidfjord, shows how people lived and subsisted in the old days.

A hydroelectric dam has been erected in the Sysendalen valley above the falls.

The highest waterfall in Norway is Kjell Falls (in Norwegian, Kjelfossen) with a total fall height of 840 meters (2,760 ft.). Kjelfossen is situated near the village of Gudvangen in Sogn og Fjordane county.
