Pictures from the Geirangerfjord in Norway: the fjord, the waterfalls and the rock walls.

Geirangerfjord in Norway
The deep blue Geirangerfjord, a branch of the Storfjord in the West of Norway.

The 15 km long Geirangerfjord is located in the region Sunnmøre of Møre og Romsdal County.

Together with the Nærøyfjord, the Geirangerfjord has been listed as a World Heritage site (UNESCO). Both Fjords are part the west Norwegian fjord landscape, which stretches from Stavanger in the South to Andalsnes 500 km to the North-East. They are among the longest and deepest fjords in the world. Their outstanding natural beauty is derived from their narrow and steep rock faces and their numerous waterfalls.

The village of Geiranger lies at the head of the fjord. You may reach it by car (County Road 63), bus, ferry and boat. It is the third biggest cruise ship port in Norway. Geiranger has several hotels and campsites. The nearest airport is Ålesund Airport Vigra. The closest train station is in Åndalsnes. The tourist season stretches from May to early September.

Dalsnibba is a 1,476 m (4,843 ft.) high mountain top that offers a breath-taking view across the most beautiful World Heritage site. It is located 21 kilometers (13 mi) south of Geiranger.

Along the fjord's sides, there are several abandoned farms. Some of them, including Skageflå, Knivsflå, and Blomberg, have been restored and are open to visitors.

Friar waterfall (the Suitor) in the Geirangerfjord
The Friar waterfall (Friaren in Norwegian), also known as The Suitor, in the Geirangerfjord, Norway.
Bare rock visible in the middle of the waterfall looks like a bottle.

The two most famous waterfalls in the Geirangerfjord are probably the Seven Sisters and the Friar which face one another across the fjord. The Seven Sisters falls have a drop of about 250 meters.
Whether all seven can be seen equally clearly or not depends on the water level. They are seen best between May and July.

Another notable waterfall in the fjord is the Bridal Veil that has the appearance of a thin veil over the rocks.
