Pictures from Kiwengwa on the East Coast of Zanzibar Island: beaches and hotels.

Broad white sandy beaches with warm shallow turquoise water make Zanzibar a favorite holiday destination. Such long and broad beaches never feel crowded even during peak season.

Most of the east coast (about 100 kilometers) of the island, as well as the southern and northern ends of the west coast, is protected by a coral reef. Coral reef is home to a rich aquatic life. At low tide, water withdraws over a long distance, water sports must be discontinued and, often, with good sandals, you can walk out to the barrier reef.

The tropical climate of the island guarantees high temperatures throughout the year, including in January - February when the northern hemisphere is facing cold weather. The only rainy seasons are from March to May and in November. Most of the time, catching a sunburn is the only risk for tourists. More than umbrellas placed by the hotels, the lush vegetation provides welcome shadow areas in abundance along the beaches.

All this makes Zanzibar the ideal destination for the lovers of beach holidays as well as for water sports enthusiasts, including divers, snorkelers and kitesurfers.

Although increasingly challenged by Nungwi in the northern end of Zanzibar, Kiwengwa remains the most popular beach resort in the island.
Italian tourists are numerous here. Kiwengwa is located on the east coast of Zanzibar. It is a small village, but the tourist area with its various hotels spreads along a 10 km-long coastal stretch until Pwani Mchangani.

This long coastal strip is home to several major hotels and a few hotel clubs, including from North to South: Sandies Neptune Pwani Beach, Coral Reef Resort, Diamonds Dream of Zanzibar, Sandies Mapenzi Beach, Waikiki Zanzibar Resort, Ocean Paradise Resort, Melia Zanzibar with its pier, Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa, Mvuvi Resort, Sultan Sands Island Resort, Sunset Beach resort, Shooting Star Lodge, Veraclub Zanzibar Village and a few other smaller institutions.

Several of the above-mentioned hotels (Neptune, Dream, Mapenzi) belong to the Switzerland-based hotel group Planhotel that is mainly active in East Africa and in the Indian Ocean.

The tourist area of the east coast of Zanzibar continues far beyond Kiwengwa with Matemwe to the North and Pongwe and Uroa to the South. However, hotels in these places are  generally smaller than the large estates in Kiwengwa.
