Pictures from Uroa and Pongwe on the East Coast of Zanzibar Island: beaches and hotels.

Pongwe on the East Coast of Zanzibar
Beach in Pongwe on the East Coast of Zanzibar Island.

Pongwe is a small fishing village located along a bay a few kilometers south of Kiwengwa on the East Coast of Zanzibar Island.
It served as slaving port at the beginning of the 20th century when the slave trade was banned in Zanzibar. Slave traders were indeed forced to use more discrete bases to continue their illegal activities.

Today Pongwe is a small tourist resort which has the same key asset as the other places of the East Coast of Zanzibar: beautiful broad sandy beaches protected by the barrier reef.
A few hotels welcome here holidaymakers seeking rest and calm as well as snorkelers. They are small or medium-sized properties.

The photos on this page show the beach of Pongwe Beach Hotel.
Elsewhere in Pongwe, water at high tide can approach the hotel so that little room is left to the beach. It is then not possible to walk for long distances on the beach, as permitted by the long almost straight beaches in Kiwengwa and Matemwe.

Uroa is a village located about 6 km south of Pongwe on the East Coast of  Zanzibar. It offers holidaymakers a long white sandy beach protected by the barrier reef.
Several hotels, including some all-inclusive resortsare set here. Among them, you find Samaki Lodge & Spa, Uroa Bay Beach Resort, and Uroa White Villa.

To the south, Chwaka Bay interrupts the long touristic strip that features most of the East Coast of Zanzibar.
Beyond the Bay, to the South, you arrive to the tourist resorts of southeastern of Zanzibar, as Bwejuu, Jambiani, and Page, again with extensive beaches, turquoise waters and snorkeling or scuba diving sites.

Since the sea breeze blows much of the year, Bwejuu is also famous for its kitesurfing facilities. Kitesurfing is however also popular in Matemwe, Kiwengwa/Pwani Mchangani, and Uroa.
