Just a short drive from the Gambling Capital of the World lies another world: Boulder city, Lake Mead and the mighty Hoover Dam. Boulder City is located approximately 32 km (20 mi) from the city of Las Vegas in Clark County. Boulder City and Panaca are the only two towns prohibit gambling in Nevada. Boulder City has three golf courses and ample mountain hiking trails. It is only a few miles away from Lake Mead.

Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States. Formed by the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead is 180 km (112 mi) long when the lake is full. There are five marinas on the lake. At Las Vegas Boat Harbor, boat rentals range from personal watercraft to houseboats that sleep up to 12 people.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area includes Lake Mead as well as the smaller Lake Mohave and the surrounding desert terrain and wilderness. It offers a wealth of things to do year-round such as boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming and sunbathing while the surrounding desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside sightseers.

With more than 1,126 km (700 mi) of fishable shore, Lake Mead is a haven for sport fishermen. The waters of Lake Mead are home to the comfortable excursion vessel, the Desert Princess. Aboard this authentic, three-level, Mississippi-style paddlewheeler, different cruises from morning into the night offer spectacular views of Lake Mead and the breathtaking scenery surrounding it.

Three of America's four desert ecosystems (the Mojave, the Great Basin, and the Sonoran Deserts) meet in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. As a result, this seemingly barren area contains a surprising variety of plants and animals, including several threatened or endangered species. Some of them may be found nowhere else in the world.

Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. Hoover Dam is 221 m (726 ft) tall and is 13 m (45 ft) wide at the top. It was constructed between 1931 and 1935. More than 20,000 men worked on the Hoover Dam. Boulder City was originally constructed for workers on the construction project.

Considered to be the world’s largest dam at the time of its construction, Hoover Dam brings much-needed water and power to the Southwest. Today, the dam draws nearly a million visitors a year. Hoover Dam, located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on U.S. 93, is open daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

At the Visitor Center, you may watch the Hoover Dam introductory film and see informative exhibits. A popular tour is the 30-minute Power Plant Tour, where you descend into the power plant and view the eight huge Nevada-side turbines. Next, you may visit the top-floor observation level and the outside deck which offers magnificent panoramas of Lake Mead, the dam, and the river. An audio presentation gives facts about the dam and its surroundings.

Two winged figures, 30 feet tall and made of bronze, stand on the Nevada side’s approach to the dam. Legend has it that rubbing their toes brings good luck. The winged figures rest on a black marble star chart that represents the stars’ positions on the day the dam was dedicated, September 30, 1935.

A spectacular four-lane highway bridge arching across the Colorado River opened in late 2010 and carries traffic between Nevada and Arizona.
