Tikal is one of the largest archaeological sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located about 64 kilometers (40 mi) from today's city of Flores in northern Guatemala.

Tikal was the largest of the cities of the Maya world for about 1,500 years. It was inhabited as early as the 7th century BC. The first major pyramids date back to the 2nd century BC. Between ca. 200 to 600 AD., Tikal dominated politically, economically, and militarily much of the Maya region. It reached then its apogee with the construction of immense pyramids. However, it went under some kind of control of the distant metropolis of Teotihuacan (Valley of Mexico) in the 4th century AD. In the mid-6th century, Calakmul and its ally Caracol defeated Tikal, the prosperity of which marked a long hiatus.

In 682, Jasaw Chan K'awiil I came to the throne of Tikal and, a few years later, he captured his rival of  Calakmul. Tikal finally prevailed over Calakmul. Then Tikal again experienced a great prosperity which continued long after Teotihuacan fell into the hands of invaders by 700.
In the ninth century, Tikal began to decline too. It finally collapsed the following century.

Tikal has countless ancient structures. Only a part of them have been excavated. The archaeological site features the Great Plaza, the Central Acropolis, the North Acropolis, the South Acropolis, the Plaza of the Seven Temples, and the Lost World (Mundo Perdido) complex. It includes six very large pyramids, labeled Temples I - VI.

Temple I, also known as the Temple of the Great Jaguar, is a funerary pyramid dedicated to Jasaw Chan K'awil I, Tikal's ruler from 682 till 734.

Tikal is part of the world heritage (UNESCO's list).
