Ponta Rasa Windmill in Pico Island in the Azores
Ponta Rasa Windmill, traditional windmill in Pico Island in the Azores.

The influence of the Flemish in the Azores is visible in the many windmills that are built in the different islands of the archipelago. Some of them, such as Ponta Rasa windmill in San João (also known as the "Land of Windmills") have been restored to keep the memory of this industry alive.

Church in the Azores
Church of Santa Bárbara in Horta in Faial Island, Azores.

The contrast of colors between white walls and black basalt stonework of churches and several other buildings are a major feature of architecture in the Azores. The Church of Santa Bárbara is a Roman Catholic church in the civil parish of Cedros in Horta, Faial Island.

This church dates back to 1594. On 20 November 1971, a fire destroyed the main nave and lateral chapels. The church was reconstructed and extended during the decade. It was later damaged by an earthquake and was restored again. It is located in front of the Ethnographic Museum of Cedros.
