Park and canal in Riga, Latvia
Park and canal in Riga, Latvia.

Earlier the canal of Riga together with the defensive moats served as an important link in the defensive system of the city. The canal acquired its current appearance after 1857 when the earth ramparts were demolished. This was done to transform the vacant territory adjoining the ramparts into a recreation area and gardens. In 2001, the canal banks were restored. The canal continues to be used for various entertainment purposes.

The length of Riga canal is 3.2 km, the depth is approximately 2 m, and 16 bridges cross it.

The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia is another attraction near Riga. It is one of the oldest and largest open-air museums in Europe. It was established in 1924. It occupies a territory of 87ha situated on the shore of Jugla Lake, a half and hour’s drive from the center of Riga.

118 old buildings from all historical districts of Latvia built from the 17th century up to the second half of the 1930s have been relocated, reconstructed and furnished in the open-air museum.

At the museum you can, among other things, find out and learn about the history and development of crafts and traditions, experience the joy of dancing, singing, playing music and games, and relax and enjoy being in nature with your children, relatives or friends.
