Harvesting rubber in the Delta, Myanmar
Harvesting latex from a rubber tree in the Delta, south of Yangon (Myanmar).

In the Myanmar Delta, there are many plantations of rubber trees. They are used for small-scale production of rubber. After the wet season, latex is harvested from rubber trees. Latex is collected in the morning. Formic acid is added to the latex in order to have it coagulated under controlled conditions. Rubber sheets are thereafter produced by pressing the latex between rollers. The next day, the rubber sheets are put in a smokehouseand then in the sun in order to dry up.

This plantation we visited near Twante has about 5000 rubber trees and employs 20 people. The produced rubber sheets are forwarded to Yangon to be sold to wholesalers of Mandalay and Moulmein and thereafter to buyers in China

Myanmar is not a major producer of rubber. However, rubber production has grown significantly in Myanmar over the past 20 years as a result of development projects of the United Nations. In 2012, the country had 526,000 ha of rubber plantations, of which almost half were in production. Rubber plantations are located mainly in Mon State. In 2012, Myanmar exported rubber for a total amount of $ 311 million. Teak, rice and gemstones are the main traditional natural resources of Myanmar.
