Mandalay Hill in Myanmar. In the foreground of the picture, the moat surrounding the former royal estate.

Located 715 km (445 mi) north of Yangon, Mandalay is the second largest city of Myanmar. It is situated in Upper Burma on the banks of the Irrawaddy River. The Irrawaddy River is the longest river of Myanmar. It crosses the country from north to south.

Mandalay was the capital of the last two Burmese Kings before the colonization of the country by the British in 1885. The city remains the cultural center of the country. The town is currently expanding. The downtown is very crowded at peak times. Motorcycles can be seen everywhere in Mandalay, unlike in Yangon.
