Ngapali beach in Myanmar
Beach of Ngapali in Rakhine State in Western Myanmar: Mya Pyin beach

Tourist attractions in Myanmar consist not only of the rich heritage of the country, its handicrafts, its markets and natural sites such as Inle Lake. Myanmar also offers great seaside holidays mainly on the beautiful white sand beaches of the the Bay of Bengal in the west side of Myanmar.

On the coast of the Bay of Bengal, the seaside resorts of Chaung Tha Beach and Ngwesaung are at 5 hours drive from Yangon. Both resorts are located 60 km away from the Pathein airport in the Ayeyarwady Region. Ngwesaung, situated south of Chaung Tha, is a new resort (open since the year 2000). It is more expensive than Chaung Tha Beach. The sand beach of Ngwesaung stretches for almost 20 km.

Ngapali is also a beach resort on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. It is situated in the Rakhine State, a few hundred kilometers north to Chaung Tha Beach. Ngapali is a quiet resort with a beautiful and long sandy beach which is lined with Palm trees and other trees.

Ngapali is equipped with a good hotel infrastructure (a dozen hotels scattered on nearly 4 km, mainly around the Mya Pyin village) and benefits from a well-connected airport (i.e. the Thandwe airport, about ten km away). Ngapali is popular with foreign tourists who find there relaxation and rest after traveling around Myanmar. It works however idling during the rainy season (May to September).

Located a few hundred kilometers north of Ngapali, the city of Sittwe, capital of the Rakhine State, has also a beach. However, it is a black sand beach and the city is better known for the morning fish market, the Ahkyaib-Daw pagoda, the Shwe Zedi Kyaung monastery and a popular point of view. Mrauk U, the last capital of  the Arakanese Kingdom, is home to a rich heritage, including Shite-thaung Temple, Htukkanthein Temple, Koe-thaung Temple, and more.

The pier marks the south end of the tourist beach of Ngapali. Beyond the pier, there are busy fishing villages. Visiting these fishing villages or cruising to the snorkeling spot of the nearby (private) Pearl Island are some of the activities available to holidaymakers in Ngapali. Most tourists merely enjoy the beach.

Like in Copenhagen, a statue of a little mermaid sits at the edge of the ocean in Ngapali, on the coast of the Bay of Bengal.
