Based on a project launched in 1992, the Artisans d'Angkor (literally Craftsmen from Angkor) was created 1998. It aims to develop employment in rural areas by providing young talented apprentices with a high-level training.

Initially, the project concerned the basic jobs in the construction industry after two decades of civil wars. Subsequently, with the financial support of the European Union and more particularly France, it focused on traditional forms of Khmer crafts: silk weaving, stone carving, wood carving, lacquering, ornamental painting, silk painting, and more recently ornamental brassware.

In 2003, the Artisans d'Angkor became a mixed company, the association of craftsmen holding 20% of the shares of the company.

Currently, the Artisans d'Angkor employs about 1,300 workers. The apprentices are selected on basis of their capacity and their motivation. They are first trained for 6 months. They get a living allowance during that period. Then the training is completed with a 3 to 6 month internship so that the apprentices acquire an expertise of professional level.

At the end of this training, they are granted the status of craftsmen and have the opportunity to work in the on-site workshops of the company or in its village  workshops. The company continues maintaining the training of its members. It has about 50 workshops in the region of Siem Reap.

The main workshop and store of the company is located in the historic center of Siem Reap near the old market. Taking photos in the store is prohibited since the items are mainly unique pieces for sale. Another site dedicated to the production of silk, the Angkor Silk Farm, is located outside the town, about 20 minutes by car from the city center.

Handicrafts of the Artisans d'Angkor are also for sale in some shops in Angkor, Phnom Penh and in Cambodian airports. The Artisans d'Angkor contributed to the restoration of some Angkor monuments. Their handicrafts were repeatedly awarded by international organizations.
