The Cambodian: pictures from a young couple with a baby, young women, and young children.

Young Cambodian couple with a baby
A young Cambodian couple relaxing with their little baby in a hammock along the moat of Angkor Wat, near Siem Reap in Cambodia.
The sky and the trees are reflected in the waters of the moat.

The immense Angkor Archaeological Park is home to the remains of the glorious era of the Khmer kingdoms glory and an abundant forest. A local population scattered in different villages lives in the area. People from the nearby city of Siem Reap also come and enjoy relaxing in the Park. In the best season, you can often meet young parents or groups of young mothers with babies along the moat of Angkor Wat.

The charm of a Cambodian girl. No thanaka but a hat to protect herself from the sun.

Women constitute more than 53% of the Cambodian population. Because of civil wars, many women have become heads of families. It is estimated that one out of four households in the countryside is managed only by a woman. As often in Southeast Asia, women have a job in addition to housekeeping.

Most stalls in Cambodia are held by women. Approximately 400,000 women workers are employed in the textile industry on behalf of Western companies and their Chinese subcontractors. Often, women are underpaid and victims of violations of the labor legislation due to lack of controls.

Unlike girls in Myanmar, most Cambodian girls have a brown skin and don't use thanaka for make-up. They often wear a hat to protect themselves from the sun, when they work outside the home.

Cambodia has nearly 15 million inhabitants. Half the population consists of young people who are less than 25 years. Most of them are less than 14 years. The Khmer are by far the dominant ethnic group. It forms of 85 to 90% of the population. The Vietnamese represent only 5 to 7% of the total population, but they can be majority or almost in some places. Apart from Laos, Cambodia is the country of the Southeast Asia that has the lowest population density.

The majority (almost 95%) of the population is Buddhist (Theravada). A minority is Muslim, consisting essentially of Cham. The official language is Khmer.

Due to the large amount of anti-personal mines that were placed during the civil war, Cambodia is the country whose percentage of amputees is the highest in the world.

The Cambodian education system has terribly suffered from civil wars which have damaged infrastructure and created a lack of teachers. Especially in the countryside, the girls have little access to education.
