Cres and Krk in Kvarner Gulf, Croatia: pictures from Cres Island and from Malinska and Baška in Krk Island.

Cres in Kvarner Gulf
Old fortress in Cres Island, Kvarner Gulf in Croatia.

The Kvarner Gulf is a bay in the northern Adriatic Sea, located between the Istrian peninsula and the Northern Croatian Coastline. It includes islands such as Cres, Krk, Pag, Rab and Lošinj.

Cres is located in the northwest part of the Kvarner Gulf. With Krk, it is one of the largest islands of that Gulf. It can be reached via ferry from the island Krk or from Brestova in the Istrian peninsula. Cres and the nearby island of Lošinj are connected by bridge.

The eponymous city of Cres is located on a bay in the northern part of the island. It is the largest town of the island and its administrative center. It has a modern blue-flag marina. The old city center is a typical example of medieval architecture. From the walls and the three gates of the old city, only a defense tower in the north-western part and a city gate have been preserved

Apart from the city of Cres and the ferry terminals (Porozina and Merag), the island has several other villages located at the coastline  (including Martinšćica, Velun, and Beli) while the other (such as Lubenice) are situated in the higher parts of the inland. The isolated beach Sv. Ivan was ranked fifteenth among the forty most beautiful beaches in the world by the German magazine Bild. It is located in the bay under Lubenice.

Cres is a sailing and diving paradise. Regattas are held every year in Cres.

Malinska in Krk Island
Marina of Malinska in Krk Island in Croatia.

Krk Island is located near Rijeka in the Bay of Kvarner in the northern Adriatic Sea. Its proximity and connection to the mainland makes Krk an attractive tourist destination. It is known as the Golden Island. The main settlements on Krk are the eponymous city of Krk, Omišalj, and Malinska. The towns of Krk, Malinska, Njivica, Vrbnik, and Šilo as well as Punat Marina are tagged with a Blue Flag.

Malinska is a tourist resort that is situated in a wooded bay in the northwestern part of the island Krk in Croatia. The whole area is known as Dubašnica.

Malinska is 15 km away from the Krk bridge connecting the island of Krk to the mainland. On the other hand, it can also be reached from the Rijeka airport (15 km).

Thanks to its geographical position, Malinska enjoys 260 sunny days per year.

For years, Rupa beach in Malinska has been awarded with Blue flag. In summer, several concerts of both classical and traditional music take place in the atrium of the Franciscan monastery and other locations in the city.

Baška in Krk Island
Baška in Krk Island in Croatia.

Baška is a village that is situated in a hill-encircled valley in the south-eastern part of the island of Krk. It is a popular tourist resort. It is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and broom. Baška was inhabited in prehistoric times. The Baška Heritage Museum opened in 1970.

Baška has a rich cultural and historical heritage. It is known for its inscribed stone monument from 1100 (the Baška Tablet). Baška heritage includes also some sacral monuments, such as the parish Church of the Hole Trinity
(built in 1723), the Church of St. John the Baptist (its bell tower houses the oldest bell in the area from 1431, called “The Old Man”), and the Church of the Holy Mother at Gorica (built in the early 15th century and hosting altar paintings by Celestin Medović and a bell from 1594) as well as other historical buildings.

Baška has one of the largest and most beautiful pebble beaches on the Adriatic: the beach (Vela plaža) is 1800 meters long. Baška has also some sand beaches.
