Caves in Central Dalmatia, Croatia: pictures from the Blue Cave in Biševo Island and the Green Cave in Ravnik Island.

 Blue Cave in Biševo
Blue Cave in Biševo in the Dalmatian archipelago, Croatia.

Biševo is a small island located in the Croatian Adriatic about five kilometers southwest of the Island of Vis. The island stretches over 6 square kilometers. The steep shores of the island have many limestone caves. The Blue Cave (Blue Grotto / Modra Špilja) is the main attraction of Biševo.

The Blue Cave was originally accessible only by diving. An artificial entrance large enough for small boats was built in 1884. Depending on the season, the ideal moment to visit the cave is between 11 a.m. and noon. Sunbeams penetrate then through the submarine opening in Blue Cave. They are reflected from the white bottom floor, coloring the cave with silver and blue colors.

The Blue Cave is only 17 meters wide, 31 meters long, and 6 meters high. The entrance to the cave is only 1.5 meters high and 2.5 meters wide.

Medvidina Špilja (Monk Seal Cave) is another famous cave in Biševo. It is 160 meters long. It gets steadily smaller so that the end of the cave is incredibly narrow. This cave was the habitat of one of the most endangered mammals in the world - the Mediterranean monk seal, an extremely rare type of seal.
Green Cave near Vis island
Green Cave (Zelena špilja) in the island of Ravnik, just near Vis Island in the Dalmatian archipelago (Croatia). Entrance.

Boat tours to Blue Cave can take the entire day. They often include a visit to another similar cave in the small island of Ravnik, the Zelena špilja (Green Grotto), which is larger in size and appears to be of an emerald-green tone due to a similar effect. A hole in the ceiling of the cave causes an unusual play of light in the sea.

The entrance and exit are next to each other. Swimming in the Green Cave is safe.
