The best beaches in Southeast Asia.

Apart from Thailand, several other Southeast Asian countries provide tourists with beautiful seaside resorts and tropical sandy beaches where vacationers may spend pleasant holidays in good weather conditions when the countries in the northern hemisphere are facing harsh winters.

In Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, the most popular beach resorts are located on the shores of the Indian Ocean in the Bay of Bengal: Ngwesaung in the Ayeyarwady Region and Ngapali in Rakhine State.

Ngapali Beach (Bay of Bengal) in Myanmar.

Ngapali is the favorite beach resort with foreign visitors to Myanmar. It is a quiet seaside resort with a 3-km long sandy beach. Ngapali is situated 400 km from Yangon. Therefore, it is not easily accessible by road. Most people go to Ngapali by air. The resort is served by Thandwe airport which is only 5 km away.

About twelve hotels are located along the coastline of Ngapali. Fishing is the main activity of the villages which are located just south of the lovely beach. To the north, the nearest town is Thandwe.

Ngwesaung is a more recent beach resort. It stretches over a nearly 20-km long sandy beach, several kilometers south of the older seaside resort of Chaung Thar (also spelled Chaung Tha). Both resorts are served by Pathein Airport and are accessible by road from Yangon (a 5 hours' drive).

The development of beach resorts and other tourist destinations in Myanmar is largely dependent on the liberalization of the political regime of the country

Beautiful beach in Cambodia
Beautiful beach of Sokha in Sihanoukville (Gulf of Thailand) in Cambodia.

In Southeast Asia, Cambodia has also several popular beach destinations. The country enjoys a huge influx of tourists visiting the famous archaeological sites of Angkor. Therefore, it can more easily develop its beach resorts. The beautiful beaches of Cambodia lie on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand and the nearby islands.

The most popular beach resorts in Cambodia are those of Kep and Sihanoukville. After civil wars and the tragedies caused by the Khmer Rouge, both resorts experience a resurgence of interest that is likely to continue in the future.

In Sihanoukville, the long white sand beaches are distributed over several successive sectors. They begin to the north with the Victory Beach and Hawaii Beach, go further with Independence Beach, Sokha Beach (one of the most beautiful beach of the area), Serendipity Beach (often the most lively beach), Ochheuteal Beach, and end to the south with Otres Beach, the most recent beach of the area, often selected by foreign tour operators.

Cambodia Beach
Beach in Ream National Park in the Gulf of Thailand in Cambodia.

Ream National Park is a marine and land park which is located in the Gulf of Thailand 18 km south of Sihanoukville.

The tourism development of Kep and Sihanoukville is gradually extending to nearby areas, such as Ream National Park and the islands off the coast of those seaside resorts, either in the form of day trips or for a several night stay. There have indeed almost pristine tropical beaches and several dive sites.

Apart from a few exceptions, most of these islands are under-equipped. Many investments are still to be made. The most famous island is probably Koh Rong because the popular French "Koh-Lanta" TV program was filmed in 2012 on the island. Koh Rong is the second largest island of Cambodia. The island has a relatively lively sector and many others which are very isolated.

Beautiful beach in Vietnam
Beach of Phu Quoc (Gulf of Thailand) in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc lies in the Gulf of Thailand, not far from the Cambodian islands. It is home to some of the most beautiful white sand beaches of Vietnam.

Phu Quoc has its own airport. Therefore, it is easily accessible by air. You can also reach it by ferry departing from the Vietnamese coast which is about 50 km away from the island.

Phu Quoc is the largest island of Vietnam. It is located only 15 km of Cambodia that has claimed the island as Cambodian territory for many years.

Truong Beach is the main beach of Phu Quoc. It stretches over 8 km on the west coast of the island. Most hotels and resorts are located on that beach. Other beaches include Ganh Dau Beach on the northwest coast, Sao Beach, Bai Thom Beach, and Bai Vong Beach to the east, Cua Can, Bai Dai Beach, and Vung Bau Beach to the west.

For most of the aforementioned beach destinations, the ideal season for tourists is from late November to late February.
