Everglades National Park
Everglades National Park in Florida, USA.

Everglades National Park consists of tropical wetlands that are located in the southern portion of Florida. The national park protects the southern 20 percent of the original Everglades. It is a famous wilderness area which is visited yearly by one million people. The exceptional variety of its water habitats has made it a sanctuary for a large number of birds and reptiles, as well as for threatened species. UNESCO has designated the park both as a biosphere reserve and a world heritage site.

Manatee in Florida
Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) in Crystal River on the western coast of Florida, USA.

Manatees, better known as sea cows, are large, mostly herbivorous marine mammals. They measure up to 4.0 m (13.1 ft) long and weigh up to 590 kilograms (1,300 lb). Despite their massive bulk, they are graceful swimmers in coastal waters and rivers. Manatees surface for air about once every five minutes, but can remain submerged as long as twenty minutes when they are resting.

The species is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN. West Indian manatees are a species that is found in coastal areas and rivers of the Caribbean Sea (Trichechus manatus manatus) and the Gulf of Mexico (Trichechus manatus latirostris)

Crystal River, Blue Spring State Park, TECO Manatee Viewing Center (Apollo Beach), Lee County Manatee Park (Fort Myers), Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, Manatee Springs State Park (Chiefland), and the Everglades are some of the best places to watch manatees in wild in Florida. Crystal River is located on the western coast of Florida, about 440 km (270 mi) north of Everglades City.

Other species of manatees are found in the Amazon Basin and West Africa.
