Rui Vaz is a quiet mountain village (800 m above sea level), 6 km west of São Domingos and about 30 km north of Praia. It is accessible by road (aluguers available from São Domingos). The town of São Domingos is located on the road between Praia in the south of Santiago Island and Assomada in the center of the island.

Rui Vaz offers nice opportunities for hiking in a magnificent green environment to the area of Monte Tchota. It is home to a pousada (thirty rooms) and a few second homes.

Rui Vaz is also known for being the base of the Center of telecommunications (radio, TV,..) of Monte Tchota, the largest of Cape Verde. This Center is located quite outside of the village. The area where it is situated offers beautiful views of Pico da Antonia, the highest peak of the island (1394 m). This mountain, which stands at the center of the island about 6 km southeast of Assomada, is an extinct volcano. It is part of the Natural Park of Rui Vaz and Serra de Pico da Antonia.

Late April 2016, an incident that left 11 dead (8 soldiers and 3 workers) took place in the military camp close to the Center of telecommunications.
