Fishing is a very important activity in Cape Verde. Large fishing boats that sail the Atlantic often call at Mindelo in the island of São Vicente. In all islands of the archipelago, local fishermen face daily the ocean in small boats in order to supply markets and street vendors. There are also many casual fishermen who try to find food for their families with the assistance of a few friends.

In all fishing harbors of the Cape Verde archipelago, you may find women who clean and retail fresh caught fish in small quantities while large amounts or big fishes are offered in markets. The tasks are clearly distributed: fishing and boat maintenance to men, sales of fish to women.
