Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand

Abel Tasman National Park in the South Island, New Zealand.

Not less than 30% of New Zealand's land territory consists of nature reserves which are protected to varying degrees: this includes thirty conservation parks and 13 national parks. Some of these national parks are part of the World Heritage listed by UNESCO. Ten of New Zealand's national parks are located in the South Island.

Abel Tasman National Park is the smallest of these national parks. It is however highly appreciated by tourists from New Zealand and abroad for its beautiful hiking and kayaking opportunities as well as for its beautiful sandy beaches. It is located to the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand.

With an area of 3,555 km² (1,373 sq. mi), Mount Aspiring National Park is one of the largest national parks in New Zealand. It is part of the Te Wāhipounamu region, which has been inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCI since 1990. Mount Aspiring National Park offers nice opportunities of hiking and mountaineering.

Te Wāhipounamu is a vast mountainous area that is situated along the Tasmanian Sea in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It is 450 km long and 40 to 90 km wide. Two-thirds of Te Wāhipounamu is covered with southern beech forests and podocarps (coniferous), some of which are over 800 years old. It includes several peaks of nearly 4,000 meters -such as Mount Cook, the highest peak in New Zealand - which are located within about 30 km from the ocean.
