South Woodham Ferrers in Essex

Welcome to South Woodham Ferrers in Essex and one of the most pleasant places to live in Britain.

What makes a town desirable to live in?

A string of factors contribute to the success of South Woodham Ferrers.

This is one of the new towns built in the 1970s to accommodate people who wanted to live in the countryside and yet connected to London by train. It is a commuter town, on a branch line of the London Liverpool Street to Southend-on-Sea railway line. It has a good road network around it providing access to the neighbouring city of Chelmsford and the A12 and A13 routes.

A town to live and play

People may travel out for work but the live and play in this beautifully designed town. Visit the town centre and you may be surprised by the number of restaurants, pubs and tea shops.  There are few shops but who needs them in this age of online shopping?

Despite its relatively young age, the town has seen the development of numerous clubs and organisations that offer entertainment, community and involvement. People get to know each other and make friends. Friends meet up for lunch or drinks in the local pubs and the social whirl begins. Before anyone gets the impression that the people of South Woodham Ferrers have a purely hedonistic lifestyle, let me explain that there is a very good blend of all ages. The original residents from the early days of the town are now pensioners who have an excellent lifestyle but there are also many young families who have chosen South Woodham Ferrers as their home.

Safe for kids

The town of South Woodham Ferrers is generally a very safe place to bring up children. It has all the infrastructure that parents desire for their children: good schools, brownies, guides and scouts. The sports facilities are second to none and the kids can be kept engaged out of school with a sports club of every category. Take a walk across Saltcoats Park and there is sure to be a sporting activity of one kind or another. Cricket is still played during summer weekends. Pass by the William de Ferrers School to see the football pitches in constant play.  And it is not just the young who keep active in this town, both gyms in the town are well supported plus a wide age range of adults works energetically at keeping fit.

Close to London’s Airports

The residents of South Woodham Ferrers have plenty of choice for holidays abroad. Lots of flights from Southend Airport, a mere twenty minutes-drive away, leave for the Canary Islands.  There are three more London Airports within a reasonable 1.5 hours drive. A combination of a high percentage of residents with well-paid London jobs means that many take frequent holidays abroad.  Most go for the sun and beaches. It is not that the weather is bad in this part of Essex, just that they can afford something better.

Is there much to see and do around South Woodham Ferrers?

We cannot brag about the scenery; it is a bit flat although beautifully green. There is a river and yachting on the south side of town, as well as one of the three local tourist attractions. The trouble with parks and gardens is that local people tend to take them for granted and yearn for new exciting places to visit.

It is more attractive and arguably easier and less expensive to go abroad than holiday in the north where the weather is colder.

What makes Essex people happy is spending their hard earned cash. They can do that on weekends when they have a day out shopping in Chelmsford or Lakeside. They also like to keep their gardens full of flowers and one of the most popular local places to visit is a garden centre which also has a very good café.

All of these shopping trips are mini days out. It could be said that the residents of South Woodham Ferrers like to ‘eat, drink and be merry’. The town looks smart, the people happy. What more does anyone want out of life?
